Hill Country Authors Series Welcomes Bryan Burrough for “The Gunfighters”

On February 12 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, the Hill Country Authors Series (HCAS) welcomed New York Times bestselling author Bryan Burrough for a conversation about his latest book, The Gunfighters: How Texas Made the Wild West.

Burrough’s fast-paced new work pulls readers into the final decades of the 1800s, a period when a wide stretch of the American West became a crucible of change. Beneath the surface of familiar frontier mythology is a more complex story of law, power, violence, and transformation. Burrough explores a striking historical reality: the region’s murder rate per capita was among the highest in American history, and he argues the reasons behind it can be traced back to one word, Texas.

The event offered attendees a chance to hear directly from Burrough about the research, the characters and conflicts that shaped the era, and why this chapter of history still matters today. It was an engaging afternoon for readers who love Texas history, true stories from the Old West, and thoughtful discussion that goes beyond the legends.
