NOTES FROM THE PREZ

As cooler weather settles in (the good news) and we return to standard time (the bad news), I want to initiate something different this month for our newsletter. Each month I plan to share the roles and responsibilities of a different board position so that you will have a better understanding of what’s involved in enabling the Friends to support our library.

We’ll start with the Treasurer positions. As a recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organization, it is crucial that we manage our finances appropriately and I want to assure you that is the case.

The Treasurers manage money for the Friends, handling cash, checks, online payments, invoices, banking, and investment accounts. Other important functions include preparing reports for the Board of Directors, as well as filing tax forms with the state and the IRS. Although the work may be “behind the scenes,” it’s a vital component of the Friends’ mission in support of the library!

Our financial team is led by Kathy Yancy, Treasurer and Geri Tease, Assistant Treasurer, both of whom bring knowledge, experience, commitment, and hard work to their roles. You should all feel comfortable that both the required actions are routinely taken care of, and that Kathy and Geri share additional information with the board and our membership when they see a reason to do that.

As the challenges of COVID-19 continue, I hope you’re able to enjoy this wonderful autumn weather. Stay safe, wear masks, and practice appropriate social distancing as you interact with others and whenever visiting the library.

FOL’S FUNDRAISING HEART

In recent months, it has been a challenge to develop fun and exciting fundraisers, and we know you might have felt inundated with emails! However, thanks to you, our incredible members, along with an extended group of Williamson County supporters, we have been very successful.

Both of the Firo Pizza and Fish City Grill events proved to be very profitable ($900 total). Our Library, Our Lifeline raised $10,000. Our most recent fundraiser that we just completed October 31st, Sailing Into Success, put $9,500 into our coffers. That gives us a wonderful total of $20,400 that we’ve been able to raise during this very challenging year.

This total is a direct result of your generous hearts, since we’ve been hampered in our usual money-making activities connected with the Hill Country Authors Series and Second-Hand Prose. (Please note: While in diminished capacity, SHP does continue to chug along! Go here for more information.)

In December, we will run our first annual end-of-the-year fundraiser, Giving Season. We hope this event will help us sustain the library in the coming year, and if successful, will become an event that will carry our support of the library into the future.

Fundraisers coming up (mark your calendars!):

  • December: Giving Season (details coming soon!)

As we always say: here’s where you can get books of your choice for a donation of your choice! SHP is located on the second floor of the GPL and is a browser’s paradise!

The selection changes all the time, so you might want to plan a visit – even in these “Grab and Go” times – if you haven’t been there in a while.

And yes, we’re taking book, media, and puzzle donations! See the Book Donations section of the SHP page on the FOL for more info.
