The Hill Country Authors Series (HCAS) returns on Nov. 12 featuring acclaimed author, presidential historian, and LBJ Foundation Chairman and CEO Mark K. Updegrove. Updegrove will discuss his latest book, Make Your Mark: Lessons in Character from Seven Presidents, offering an engaging look at the leadership, character, and legacies of seven American presidents.

Drawing on his personal interviews and conversations with seven presidents, Updegrove explores the qualities that shaped their leadership and influenced their presidencies. The book examines Gerald Ford’s sense of duty, Jimmy Carter’s commitment to service, Ronald Reagan’s optimism, George H.W. Bush’s humility, Bill Clinton’s resilience, George W. Bush’s commitment to giving back, and Barack Obama’s grace.

Mark K. Updegrove is Chairman and CEO of the LBJ Foundation and serves as Presidential Historian for ABC News. He is also the host of Live from the LBJ Library with Mark K. Updegrove, now in its third season. From 2009 to 2017, he served as director of the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin. He is the author of six books on the presidency and has conducted exclusive interviews with multiple U.S. presidents. Earlier in his career, he served as publisher of Newsweek and president of TIME Magazine’s Canadian edition.

In Make Your Mark, published by HarperCollins in 2025, Updegrove draws on his experiences with presidents from Gerald Ford through Barack Obama to explore the essential qualities of character, leadership, and legacy. The book offers lessons that extend beyond the presidency to anyone interested in leadership and making a meaningful impact.
