About the Store
The Friends of the Georgetown Public Library manage, stock and operate the Second-Hand Prose store. Our goal is to raise funds by selling gently-used books and media. During the FY 2014 – 2015 SHP earned $31,760 in book sales and $5,681 in collectible book sales; online sales from Amazon.com and Ebay brought in $14,085.
We were able to use the proceeds from these sales to give our library the opportunity to fund unbudgeted projects and purchases.
- 10 AM – 7 PM Monday through Thursday
- 10 AM – 5 PM on Friday
- 10 AM – 4 PM on Saturday
- 1 PM – 4 PM on Sunday
Volunteers work at the store from one hour after the Library opens until one hour prior to the Library closing, each day. For those two hours each day when we are not staffed, purchases may be paid for at the Reference Desk right outside the entrance to Second-Hand Prose.
Second-Hand Prose has a collection within the store, Collector’s Corner, which includes books that are priced individually. These books are generally considered rare or collectible and may include author signed copies, first editions, presentation copies, small press books and books of specialized interest or unusual subject matter. Nearly $5,681 of collectible books were sold by the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library in the store during the October 1, 2014-September 30, 2015 fiscal year.
Many of these books are listed for sale online at Amazon.com. Visit the FOL storefront at Amazon to shop the inventory list of these books.
When you donate your books to the Georgetown Public Library, they get a whole new life and you get a receipt for your taxes.
Life Cycle of the Books You Donate:
Step 1: Bring your books, CD music albums, DVDs or audio books to the library and drop them off at the front desk as a donation. (Ask for a receipt if you’d like to have one for tax purposes.) If you have two or more boxes of books, you can call us at 512-931-7708 and we can arrange to pick up the books.
Step 2: Library staff and volunteers go through all the donations. The library takes any books that they would like to add to their collection. The remaining books are sorted and sent to the Second-Hand Prose Bookstore.
Step 3: Unsold books at SHP are removed from inventory on a regular basis and donated to a person who then donates them to charitable organizations.
